Supreme Court Says “Let It Be Released” for ‘Udaipur Files’

The Supreme Court of India has refused to immediately stop the screening of the film ‘Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal tailor murder,’ stating, “Let the film be released.”

Why Someone Wanted to Stop the Film

The film, “Udaipur Files,” is based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal. One of the accused in the murder, Mohammed Javed, sought a court order to prevent the movie’s release. He argued that the film would negatively impact his ongoing trial and infringe upon his right to a fair trial. Additionally, Javed claimed that the movie’s trailer and promotional materials were “communally provocative” and depicted the accused as guilty before any verdict was reached.

The Supreme Court’s Decision

The Supreme Court, specifically a bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi, did not agree to an urgent hearing for Javed’s request. They instructed him to present his petition to the regular bench once the court reopens after its summer vacation on July 14.

Delhi High Court’s Take

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has directed the producers of “Udaipur Files” to arrange a screening of the film for petitioners who are seeking a ban due to concerns about hate speech. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the Delhi High Court that certain objectionable portions identified during the certification process have already been removed from the film.

The movie is set to be released on July 11.
